I attribute the name of this neighbourhood to George Maydwell, who uses it in his hexagonal version of George's Brain - as displayed in his [Hexagonal Cellular Automata Gallery]. This neighbourhood has also been called the "Star of David" neighbourhood - for example on a page devoted to [Snowflakes and Spirals on the Hexagonal Lattice]. There appears to be some potential for confusion with the Star of David neighbourhood here.
