This is one of the simplest one-dimensional neighbourhoods. Wolfram himself referred to automata built on this neighbourhood with one state per cell as being "elementary". There are 256 possible transition rules for such automata. These have been well-studied. This neighbourhood is also sometimes known as the "1D r=1" neighbourhood.
